Are you having a one-way conversation?

Making the connection between how to live in the social media world and being a witness for Jesus Christ isn’t that difficult.  While I was reading an article entitled, “How Small Businesses Are Using Social Media for Real Results” I was struck by this primary connection:

Have a conversation.

Social Media is all about conversations not promotions, gimmicks or pitches.  Reid Travis shares in the article, “I feel like companies that practice one-way conversation (the talking-only kind) are pretty much missing the entire point of social media…”  Sounds like all the best type of advice we share regarding evangelistic conversations.  “Build rapport”, “Listen!” “Build a relationship, not a contact”.

Perhaps we need to take some of those best practices for evangelistic conversations and apply them to our social media worlds in ministry.  When and how are you listening to the followers on your fan-page, blog or twitter account? Do you talk to them specifically? Do you know who they are?  Do you express your appreciate for them directly? Do you know what their issues, questions and concerns are?

Are you having a conversation or are you just talking?

Some thoughts on how to have a conversation:
- are your students tweeting or blogging about your events and weekly meetings after they happen? Are you involved in these conversations? Clarifying? Answering questions? Listening?

- are you helping your students learn how to listen to their friends on social media venues?

- do you share experiences and relationships through social media venues or just promotions? (see article for an example)
